Teddy Atlas

After his own boxing career, Teddy turned his talents to training fighters, going on to coach 18 World Champion boxers. Teddy trained future heavyweight champion Mike Tyson when Tyson was an amateur boxer living in Cus D’Amato’s home in Catskill. In 1994, in a memorable performance as trainer, Teddy inspired Michael Moorer to beat Evander Holyfield for the world heavyweight championship. In 2011, heavyweight Alexander Povetkin won the WBA heavyweight championship with Teddy in his corner. Since 2018, Teddy has been training light heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

Teddy has also employed his talents outside of the ring. He trained dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp for her successful comeback at age 42. He trained actor Willem Dafoe for his role as a boxer in the holocaust film “Triumph of the Spirit,” and while on location in Poland, Teddy choreographed the film’s boxing scenes and appeared as one of Dafoe’s opponents. Teddy also choreographed fight scenes for the television series “Against the Law.” And he appeared in the movies “Play it to the Bone,” “Only in America: The Don King Story” and “Gloria.” He also provided the commentary for the popular E.A. Sports video game, Fight Night 4 and 5.

Teddy has brought his ability to motivate a fighter to other arenas as well. As a motivational speaker, he has worked with several NFL teams, including the St. Louis Rams, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans and the Oakland Raiders. He has also spoken to collegiate teams, including the Wagner College basketball team, the Nebraska College football team and the Syracuse University football team. And he has spoken to students at St. John’s University, New York University, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Adelphi College and Wagner College. Teddy also trained the N.Y. Jets for three seasons during Eric Mangini’s reign as head coach, providing the team with boxing lessons to improve speed and agility, as well as striking skills for the linemen.

Teddy currently is the host of his own podcast, "The Fight with Teddy Atlas". For twenty years, Teddy was the color analyst for ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. And he worked as the boxing commentator for NBC’s coverage of the Olympic Games in Sydney (2000), Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and London (2012). He also did the commentary for “The Contender”, which was broadcasted on ESPN.

Teddy was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June 2019. Teddy has also been inducted into the New York and New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame, the World Boxing Hall of Fame in California and Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame. Teddy has also been honored by the Boxing Writers Association of America; he received the John F.S.
